Spanish Immersion in Oviedo Excursions

Discover the rich, historic culture of Oviedo through site visits, museums, and more.

Walking tour of Oviedo: Go back in time to Medieval Oviedo and discover the lasting traces still visible today. Enter the city through its medieval walls and explore the religious, business, and political quarters that have shaped the Oviedo we know today.

Gijón: Visit the coastal city of Gijón and see the Museo Etnografico Pueblo de Asturias and Roman Baths.

Oviedo Cathedral: The Cathedral of Oviedo is home to a collection of important relics, such as the santo sudario, a cloth used to cover Jesus after his crucifixion, the sandal of St. Peter, and much more. We will read medieval legends about how these relics came to Oviedo.


Overnight Excursions (fall, winter, and spring terms)

Students will go on two overnight trips from the following list. Selected site visits vary by term and/or program. 

  • Salamanca: Tour the old and new cathedrals, visit the Universidad de Salamanca y Colegios Mayores and explore the Plaza Mayor. Visit the central monuments of the city, home to Spain's oldest university. 
  • Bilbao & San Sebastian: With Bilbao as a home base, explore the Old Quarter of the city and its two well known museums, The Guggenheim and the Museo de Bellas Artes. Spend a day in San Sebastián, home of the famous film festival, elegant shops and tapas bars and La Concha beach.
  • Málaga: Discover Málaga's rich history by visiting landmarks like the Roman Theater, the Cathedral, and the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress. Explore Picasso's legacy at the Museo Picasso and tour his birthplace to learn more about the artist's life.
  • Sevilla: Explore Christian landmarks like the Seville Cathedral and its tower, the Giralda, and Moorish marvels such as the Real Alcázar. The city's rich Jewish heritage is also evident in the charming and narrow streets of the Santa Cruz quarter
  • Toledo & Madrid: Visit Madrid's famous Prado and Reina Sofia Museums and explore the Madrid of the Borbon and Hapsburg dynasties. Spend the day in Toledo and visit the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, Casa del Greco, Cathedral, Museo Sefardi and Iglesia de Santo Tomé.
  • La Rioja & Burgos: See Burgos, home to El Cid, and visit the Gothic Cathedral. At La Rioja, tour the Museo del Vino, San Millan Yuso and Suso Monasteries, considered to be the "Cradle of the Spanish Language."
  • Astorga & León: At León, tour the Cathedral, the Basilica de San Isidoro and the Casa de los Botines. At Astorga, visit the Museo Diocesano de Gaudi, Cathedral and the Museo del Chocolate.
